A couple months back, one of our hosted infrastructure as a service (“cloud computing”) providers came into our office and did an in-depth training for our staff on their dedicated server offering. For the majority of the training, the provider’s representative ran through a slide deck on the same ‘ol stuff about Gartner stats, magical quadrants, 25 nines, blah blah blah…. but then I asked him my famous big question….

Once again, I found myself explaining why Yelp is not a good place to form your opinion on providers. People never stop and think… “Wow, my provider hasn’t had an outage or glitch in 6 months… I think I’ll go on over and post a raving review on Yelp!” Nope… but if you have an issue with a service provider and you get a person in customer care that isn’t very nice… Yelp and everyone around you is gonna hear about it.
Yes, we can all admit that the first thing we do when looking for a new product or solution is simply Google “what is the best ______” and go with the highest reviews, or ask “experts” on the forums. This may suffice for your kids’ Christmas gift, but when the security of your business’ data structure is at stake, this kind of research won’t cut it.
