So when I’m explaining SD-WAN to companies’ IT departments, one of the questions I get asked a lot is, (as I’m having a conversation), I bring up the fact that with SD-WAN, you can actually do traffic shaping for inbound traffic as well as outbound traffic.

Well, typically a lot of the SD-WAN providers out there, they only can control outbound traffic. So a lot of people don’t understand how an SD-WAN service provider can actually do traffic shaping on inbound internet traffic as well as outbound internet traffic.

The answer to that question is only cloud-enabled SD-WAN solutions can do that. What a Cloud-enabled SD-WAN solution is, it’s a SD-WAN service provider that gives you an appliance for your site, for your location, and that appliance connects to that service provider’s nearest Cloud gateway, so a router in the Cloud.

So when your onsite router connects to their onsite router, now you have routers at both ends. So now you can control inbound and outbound internet traffic. You can do traffic shaping on not just your outbound internet traffic, but you can also traffic shape on your inbound internet traffic.

For instance, if you want to make sure you’re prioritizing VoIP calls for your hosted VoIP phone system and you want to prioritize those calls, not just for your outbound internet activity, but for inbound internet activity, you can do that by making sure you sign up with a cloud-enabled SD-WAN service provider.
