SD-WAN is the big buzzword out there and your company is looking into it, so maybe you’re getting off an MPLS network or maybe you’re just looking into SD-WAN to improve some of your applications, but one of the things that’s come up is 4G.

Can you use 4G backup in conjunction with SD-WAN and will it improve what you guys are doing in terms of business continuity?

So yes, you can use 4G in conjunction with your SD-WAN service. So you can plug a 4G internet connection into your SD-WAN appliance with most SD-WAN vendors and it can load-balance between multiple internet connections, but you want to be careful about that because 4G is a subscription-based service where you’re going to pay for data usage.

So even though, yes, you can use 4G for an SD-WAN service, it can get really pricey if you’re using a lot of internet at that side and it’s pulling from the 4G quite a bit.

So I’d recommend using 4G as a passive standby and using maybe a primary fiber connection, maybe a secondary cable broadband connection and have it load-balanced between those two and then program the SD-WAN to keep that 4G as an inactive standby in case those first two connections go down, use the 4G connection or 5G connection as the go to at that point. That way, you’re not eating up tons of data usage and driving that 4G or 5G bill up quite a bit, unnecessarily.

So I hope that helps a little bit about 4G and SD-WAN. If you have any questions on SD-WAN vendors, please reach out. I’ve been a broker for SD-WAN, MPLS, all these ISPs for 20 years.
