So your company is searching for SD-WAN.

So you’ve heard that it’s a great technology, you’re looking into it, you’re researching providers. What type of providers should you be looking at?

Well one of the things you should really consider is going with a cloud-enabled SD-WAN solution. If not any reason for just the fact that you can load balance multiple ISPs simultaneously for both outbound and inbound traffic.

Well how does that happen? Most cloud-enabled SD-WAN solutions provide you with static IPs from the network. So you’re not using your own IP addresses from your own ISP, you’re using their IP addresses. So because you’re using their IPs, they can help you load balance both outbound internet traffic and incoming inbound ingress internet traffic on all your ISP connections. Even if you have multiple ISPs, different ISPs.

So say you have one ISP for your primary fiber connection, a different ISP for your secondary broadband internet connection, and then a 4G or 5G wireless connection. You can load balance all three of those for both outbound and inbound traffic with a cloud-enabled SD-WAN solution because they’re providing with IP addresses from the network.

SD-WAN Vendors - Load Balancing multiple ISPs

Another way some of the SD-WAN service providers can help you load balance multiple ISPs for both outbound and inbound traffic is through DNS manipulation. So through manipulating your DNS records slightly, some of those SD-WAN service providers are able to control both outbound and inbound traffic. So there’s a couple of different ways to do it, but you really want to find vendors who can load balance over multiple ISPs for both outbound and inbound traffic, because if you can only load balance for outbound, you’re only looking at half of your traffic typically. So why not load balance for both?
