Hey. Your company is in the market for a new phone system. And a question that you’re asking, which I’ve been asked so many times, I can’t even count, is can we keep our phone numbers? If we move to a new cloud phone system, you obviously have some bunch of phone numbers today that you’ve invested a lot of money into and a lot of goodwill has gone into those phone numbers over the years, like your main phone number, maybe sales reps, individual phone numbers. So it’d be a travesty if you had to let those go. Well, I will tell you, the answer to that in a minute.

Can your company keep your existing phone numbers?

If you move from your phone system with some maybe some phone lines from a telecom service provider and move that over to a cloud phone system? The answer is yes. That new cloud phone system company can move all of your phone numbers over to them. They can. It’s called porting. They can port all of the phone numbers over to them. So you can keep all of your same phone numbers even if they’re from a different area. So say your business is moving from one city to another. You can still keep all of your same phone numbers and that’s something that’s changed over the years a little bit. But now you can keep all those same phone numbers. So it’s great.

2 Exceptions from keeping your numbers

Number one is international phone numbers. So if you want to port international phone numbers, say you have a location in in China and you want to move to a different phone system service provider that’s encompassing all of your company’s locations and you want to move those phone systems over, that might be a little bit more complicated because depending on the country where those phone numbers are located, some countries are run by a kind of monopoly phone company that does not allow you to port the phone numbers out. So that would be an exception, is if one of your locations is in a country that does not allow the phone numbers to be ported. But if all the numbers are in the United States or most countries, you should be able to port them. No problem.

the second exception is there are some and this comes I’m speaking of the United States. There are some areas in the United States. It’s very rare, but there are some rural areas where the phone numbers are owned by a rural, private telecommunications company that also does not allow the phone numbers to be ported. It’s very rare. It usually never happens, but it does happen every once in a while. There are some small pockets in the United States where all the phone lines and phone numbers are just owned by a small private rural telecommunications company and they have different rules on porting. But for the most part, all across the United States and across most countries, yes, you can port your phone numbers.
