Weekly In-Person Huddles at Work are Essential!

rp_Aerocom-Conference-Room-300x225.jpgThese days, most companies have a digital work structure with many of their employees telecommuting and working remote. While convenient and comfortable for both employers and employees, it’s important to remember the reason why traditional offices and work spaces were created in the first place. Just because we have the technology to be completely remote doesn’t mean that it’s more productive, and a large number of remote companies are going back to traditional methods.

Truth is, there is something magical and powerful about humans being in a room together and having a “ritual” of work. As humans, we are visual and emotional beings who need quality interaction with other people and places in our daily life.

This is why a lot of offices still require employees to come into work at least partially. In addition to email, chat, phone and video communication, it’s essential to have weekly face-to-face meetings with everyone at work and here’s why…

  • Identity: After working in the digital world for a long time, sometimes we lose a sense of our work and company identity. We can forget how empowering and official the office can feel, and the seriousness and legitimacy behind a physical place of work and productivity. Not to mention, who doesn’t like to dress up in a sharp suit or put on some heels once in a while to feel confident and professional vs. being on GoToMeeting in your pajamas…
  • The Human Element: When you mostly interact with people electronically, it’s easy to treat them as digital entities vs. real humans with character and emotion. Nothing can correct this problem more, than shaking a co-workers hand every week and sitting across the table from him or her.
  • Value: Presenting your accomplishments to a live group every week can be a little nerve-wracking – but it’s good nerves! We want to do well for our team, and we all can look back on a presentation that garnered much-appreciated feedback and respect of our peers and superiors.

Here at AeroCom, it’s really awesome to have weekly team huddles at the office for all of the above reasons. Everyone here is incredibly supportive and motivating, and I always come away from the huddles refreshed and excited to dive into the week’s projects. That’s my experience; let us know what working environment your team thrives in!
