Integrated (Converged) Voice Service

February 18, 2011 Aerocom

Definition: Integrated (Converged), Voice Service is when a service provider delivers Voice (a.k.a. “phone service”), Internet and/or MPLS WAN service through the same access circuit that the voice is being delivered on. Along with the circuit itself, the service provider installs an Integrated Access Device (IAD), at your company’s location, which intelligently routes all voice and data traffic, on-the-fly. The voice dial tone can handed-off as PRI, SIP or Analog, per your company’s requirements.

Behind the scenes, the service provider is using MPLS technology to prioritize voice over all other traffic (to ensure quality). But when voice is not being used, the entire bandwidth can be utilized for the other services purchased, such as Internet access or MPLS.

Capture

Best Fit: Any company that has 20+ office employees that needs a high quality Internet or WAN service, in addition to their phone service.

Benefits:

  • Lower Cost: Especially at smaller sites, a business can use one circuit for multiple services and eliminate having separate, under-utilized circuits for voice and/or Internet. For instance, how often is your company utilizing the full capacity of it’s current voice circuit, Internet circuit or MPLS circuit? Isn’t there always some wiggle room for “just in case we get busy?” Well, why not have that excess “just in case” bandwidth available to other services that might be able to use it… such as Internet bandwidth?
  • More bandwidth: For example, if a company is currently using a 10M fiber circuit for Internet, a 10M Circuit for Internet and an ISDN PRI T1 for voice, they can now use a single, 20M integrated circuit that can go up to 20M (or 625 simultaneous calls), for any of the 3 services.
  • Better call quality for VoIP, such as SIP or Hosted PBX. Companies can have their SIP trunks or Hosted PBX service provider deliver an Integrated circuit, instead of running this service over a 3rd Party Internet connection. By doing so, they will receive guaranteed call quality on their SIP trunks or Hosted PBX service.
