TOM Feb: Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)

This February, we’re introducing Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as our Tech of the Month.

In laymen’s terms, SIP is a signaling communication protocol that’s used for controlling multimedia including voice and video over IP networks.

When looking at Voice/VoIP solutions from different providers, the SIP component can offer a lot of scalable cost options for companies looking to connect phone circuits over the Internet without venturing into completely hosted or full cloud systems.

Unlike these expanded VoIP packages, SIP trunking as a service allows phone integration between company locations, utilizing a dedicated on-prem VoIP server/PBX box and an Internet circuit. Companies can save money by using their current SIP-enabled phone systems and LAN switch. The advantage of buying SIP piecemeal like this is that you can scale exactly as needed and have complete control over your own system, as you will manage all of your own components.

Overall, SIP is great way for a company to put simultaneous calls onto their T1 (or other access method), to direct incoming calls to various locations or to have local phone numbers from their nationwide sites all ring in a central location
