Windows 10 just got EVEN better

We are all familiar with Microsoft. This past February, Microsoft acquired a new chief executive, Satya Nadella. Since then, Microsoft is now bent on bringing relevance back. With the announcement of the upcoming Windows 10 release, many controversies and questions have up roared.

Will Microsoft 10 be free?

Is Microsoft going to to hook us on a subscription?

Is this just a marketing and promotional activity?

People seem to be confused as to what to expect from this new release. First of all, Microsoft’s idea behind Windows 10 may have been the boldest yet. Its intent is to put the platform on any device that could possibly run it. Besides all the cool new perks that come along with the upgrade, Windows 10 will have universal apps that work on any device so long as that device runs Windows 10, including phones, tablets, PCs, the Xbox, TVs and even the new HoloLens virtual-reality headset.

Yet the question still stands: is Windows 10 actually free? The answer to that is, YES- it is free to those that have Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that will upgrade within a year of its release. I do believe that Windows 10 should be offered free to everyone. This will not only allow Microsoft to open its market for new potential customers to purchase apps like Office and have access to Windows App store but it will eliminate all the pirated licenses of Windows. Keeping Windows users on a current, safe version of Windows means better security and privacy for everybody. From my personal experience, most people have been spoiled by Android and Chrome with consistent free software upgrades like, Android’s latest 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Furthermore, there is this marketing confusion over whether “free” means free or “pay later”. Microsoft stated, “once a qualified Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it up to date for the supported lifetime of the device, keeping it more secure, and introducing new features and functionality over time – for no additional charge.” Still we as consumers are still quite skeptical about this so called free upgrade.

Microsoft has spent the last months surprising us. With the new designs of their stores and new products, Microsoft could become the new Apple. Still the real motto of this story is much simpler and more familiar: nothing in technology is ever really free.
