For those of you who have yet to invest in anything in regards to the cloud, you may be considered behind the times (as in stuck in 2013), or may have some hesitations, which is completely normal. I’m sure you are wondering, why the cloud? Why would I rely on the internet to have control of my data and files? Most importantly, what happens in the case of a natural disaster, and what would I expect as a growing business? We discuss some of the important areas in which a cloud provider should be focusing their efforts. Keep in mind that although you may have hesitation, businesses are finding that switching to the cloud is saving them roughly 74 % over your traditional storage costs than having it onsite.

One of the efforts discussed is that providers should make sure that they have a back up plan and archive to show their clients. Many companies still use the tape service method. Meaning that your provider will take your data from a disk to a tape, where the tape vaulting services will provide an additionally backed up copy in an event of a disaster. Tapes will then be used as a replacement until everything is restored.

The next area in which a provider should bring their attention to in a case of a disaster is business continuity. In this case, most providers have an active system on standby with an entire replicated data set that cannot experience any downtime. Business continuity is a higher recovery time objective than traditional disaster recovery.

Lastly, it is important for a provider to focus on disaster recovery. Some disaster recovery plans can include contracts for your hardware so you can take your tapes and recover systems in another provider data center. Another new cloud service has been gaining popularity and that is disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS). It can replicate data to a service provider either in an application-based method, host-based or array-based method.
