- Definition: Cable Internet access is a type of Internet access delivered to a customer over coaxial cable wire and (similar to DSL), is an inexpensive, lower quality connection that offers a fast download and significantly slower upload speed (A-Synchronous). Cable Internet access is also a shared service, meaning that the speed quoted is your “maximum” speed and the “actual” speed a business receives will fluctuate throughout the day, depending on how many neighboring companies are using their Internet connections from that same provider. Cable connections also do not typically come with a Service Level Agreement (SLA), and are prone to more downtime than higher quality connections, such as T1 and various Ethernet connections.
- Best Fit: A micro-sized company with non-critical Internet needs, looking for a very inexpensive Internet connection or a small company looking for an inexpensive, lower-quality, back-up Internet connection to their primary Internet connection. Some companies prefer cable over DSL because cable is not distance sensitive, and therefore, more guaranteed to install successfully.
