March T.O.M. Hosted Firewall + Content Mangement

March 13, 2015 Aerocom

We’d like to introduce our Technology of the Month: Hosted Firewall and Content Filtering.

Everyone needs to block unauthorized network access, inappropriate web content, and infected files and malware, and there IS a better and more secure way to do it.

Untitled1Being that most firewall breaches are caused by bad hardware configurations and user-written policies, most would agree that hosting this service would make total sense…the same way that using a hosted data center eliminates a lot of IT problems.

While there will be changes to your firewall routine, I promise you they will be for the better…

A lot of guys like to mock the fact that “cloud firewall” is not literally in the cloud. That is true and that’s why we prefer the more accurate term hosted firewall. Basically, this comes down to the firewall hardware being housed in the MPLS provider’s data center, where all of the Internet circuits terminate. Whatever you want to call it, the safety and security of your firewall defense system is being handed off to a specialized entity who can do it way more efficiently than you can 9 times out of 10.

Untitled2Maybe you are used to tweaking your hardware on a daily basis and are concerned with distancing yourself from that level of control. Most providers will give you access to the unit, in addition to doing the programming for you. If you want to make changes, all you’ll need to do is open a ticket. If you are used to constantly making changes to your firewall, it will make sense to hookup with a provider that is flexible and responsive to your updates, and believe me, these do exist!

More on reducing cost management; if you’re over buying new hardware every couple of years, finding a provider that can keep it constantly up to date for you at an enterprise level can save you a lot of money. This being said, any complaints about high monthly or yearly costs can be weighed with the fact that you aren’t going to have to sink into the treasury to buy a huge piece of hardware that’s going to be outdated and worthless in a year or two.

Untitled3Most importantly, once everything is completely configured, you won’t notice any difference than if your firewall was sitting there in your office, except better levels of security and fewer breaches. If you’d like to get some more piece of mind on hosting your firewall and would maybe like to take a look at a few possible providers, let us know…
