Hi, this is Mike Smith, President of AeroCom, the best way for your company to shop and purchase telecommunications, cloud and internet services.

Okay, so today I’m going to talk to you about backup internet connectivity. So, what I’ve run into a lot is IT departments or decision-makers who know that their company needs a backup internet connection would love to have a backup internet connection but management will not approve it.

So let me give you a quick way to help them see the importance of a backup internet connection. So being a business owner myself, I can tell you that one of the most expensive things that companies are paying for every single month is payroll. So, one way to justify a backup internet connection to your management team is to use it, to justify it using the amount of money they are paying in payroll.

How much money do you think is your company paying to just have people sitting and working in their office? That you figure maybe, I don’t know, $35,000, $40,000 a year or more on average per employee. You could start doing the math and breaking that down for an hourly cost.

Now if your internet connectivity goes down, we all know that all of your employees are going to throw up their hands and they say, “Oh, I can’t work today. I can’t work. The internet’s down. Half the things I do are on the internet and the internet’s down.”

So even though there probably are some things they could be doing, your company is definitely losing some efficiency out of the money they’re paying to have people sitting in the office during that moment, to employ the employees at that moment in time.

So you can do the math and work it backwards and say, “Okay, what’s the average amount of salary per year?” Then divide that down until you get it hourly. How many people are sitting in the office, and then guess at how much efficiency are they losing? Are they losing 5%, 50%?

So do that math, and the dollar amount is huge compared to the small amount of money that you’d pay for a backup internet connection, even over the course of a year. So if you lose your internet connectivity for like a day, oh my gosh, like you’re going to be able to justify having a backup internet connection for many, many, many years before you can say it’s too expensive.

So that’s just a little tip to help management understand the math behind it in a way that they think about the business as opposed to just proposing it, “Hey, it’s going to cost $100 a month” and they don’t want to put the budget money out there. But when they think of how much money they’ll lose, it pales in comparison to the small cost of a backup internet connection.

So, I hope that was helpful.

If you have any questions, as always email or call me. If you need quotes on backup internet connections, reach out. I’m happy to help.
