WILL AMAZON’S DRONES TAKE OVER THE ONLINE MERCHANT WORLD?

Why Specialty Retailers Don’t Need to Worry About a War to Win Consumers

Amazon has the attention of many small online companies as they roll out the news of their new unmanned aerial drones. These drones will be able to deliver packages to customers at a record speed of 30 minutes! Now that is a speedy delivery! Some suggest this could be a huge problem for businesses if it becomes a reality.

Should your online company be afraid of these drones? In reality, the answer is no.  Instead of fearing innovation, companies need to decide what they can do to stand out and make their presence known in various digital channels. It’s times like these that a company should seek to be unique, in order to survive. We live in an extremely digital world; therefore, it only makes sense that having a strong digital strategy for your business is the key to success.

Getting goods to consumers quickly isn’t always the most important factor

Sure we all love Amazon for its great prices and timely delivery—and delivery at an even faster rate is something to be joyful about! However, Amazon is known for only those few perks; they are not known for building the stories that lie behind the brands they sell. Since we live in an age where there are often too many options to choose from, it is only natural that we tend to spend our money on the brands that we know, trust, and respect.

Consumers are searching for an experience and a connection with brands; this is where specialized online-only retailers have a major advantage over the big players like Amazon and WalMart (who are much too large to connect with consumers on a personal level). Specialty companies, like Crocs and Bonobos, are using this tactic to their advantage; they are integrating their brand history into their commerce platform. As a result, they are building brand loyalty with their customers and an unforgettable shopping journey.

Business shall go on

It seems that the drones don’t pose a major threat to online businesses and that business will go on as usual.

Do you think these drones have the potential to drive small online retailers out of business? Or do you think these drones will quickly fade out due to the potential regulatory issues they may face? We would love to hear your thoughts!
