Fiber Internet Access Service Providers

  • Definition: Internet access that is brought into a building using fiber optic cables and handed off to the end-user via fiber strands. Speeds are offered in Optical Carrier (OC), increments such as OC-3 (155M), OC-12 and higher. Due to more recent products, such as Ethernet, direct Fiber Internet is no longer offered as a service with most providers. There is no reason why a customer would want to purchase the expensive equipment needed to terminate strands of fiber from a provider as opposed to just receiving the connection via Ethernet.
  • Best Fit: A company that has their own fiber equipment, such as an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

    • More control. More minute technical control over the service because you are using your own fiber equipment.
