This year at the IFA 2014, a global trade show for consumer electronics and home appliances, there were plenty of new innovative products: TV sets, smartphones, wearables, interconnected living rooms, and even convenient kitchen gadgets. But a certain trend in products stood out, super-thin tablets and 2-in-1 PCs, many of which were created by Intel’s new Core M chips. Intel has been teasing us with glimpses of a 7.2 mm-thick tablet which is thinner than an iPad air.
Intel plans to use these new processors to power new 2-in-1 devices from manufacturers which include: Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Toshiba. According to Intel, the processor delivers an optimal blend of mobility and performance; and was built for amazing performance in the thinnest, fanless ultra-mobile devices. The Core M also doubles battery life.
Core M is coming after Intel’s current “Y series” of Haswell processors, which are used in certain 2-in-1 PCs.
The Intel Core M is about 50 percent faster in compute performance and 40 percent faster in graphics performance, compared to older 4th generation Intel PCs. The company said, “The Intel Core M processor and platform power reductions raise the bar on battery life even higher. The Intel Core M processor can handle more than 8 hours of video play, which is up to 20 percent (1.7 hours) longer battery life versus previous-generation Intel Core processors and double the battery life of the average 4-year-old PC.” These perks make this new processor a leader in the industry.
In addition to speed, the Core M is also 50 percent smaller and 60 percent lower thermal power than previous generations, at 4.5 watts. Because of its small size, OEMs are able to create ultra-thin, fanless systems that are smaller than 9 mm. The Intel Core M processor should be available starting this coming holiday season. As mentioned earlier, other manufacturers will be unveiling devices of all shapes, sizes, and prices – and these products will be built with the Core M in mind.
Let’s take a quick look at these manufacturers and what devices they have in store:
- Acer: will be releasing a new 2-in-1 line of notebooks with the Aspire Switch 12. These notebooks will have a 12.5 inch FHD display, kickstand, and magnet keyboard. Allowing users to move between five modes with ease.
- Asus: unveiled their ASUS Zenbook UX305, which boasts a lightweight feel, thin Ultrabook, and a 13-inch QHD display. They also announced the ASUS Transformer Book T300FA (also a 2-in-1 which will be sold in Europe). In the future, ASUS is talking about creating the Transformer T300 Chi, which is thinner than their most recent creations.
- Dell: revealed the Latitude 13 7000 Series, another 2-in-1 Ultrabook designed with business in mind – the tablet is detachable, making it a perfect product for business people on the go.
- HP: decided to continue its line of ENVY products by introducing the new HP ENVY x2. This is a detachable device and is available in two sizes 13.3-inch and 15.6-inch.
- Lenovo: is releasing its Lenovo ThinkPad Helix in October.
- Toshiba: Intel is currently working with Toshiba to create a Core M-based design as well.
Other interesting facts about the new Core M:
- It is a “Conflict-Free” product-doesn’t contain conflict minerals (tin, tantalum, tungsten, or gold). Money made from these minerals can sometimes benefit armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or surrounding countries.
- It is available in various versions-2.0GHz Intel Core M-5Y10/5Y10a processors or 2.6 GHz Intel Core M-5Y70 processor (which is Intel’s highest performer).
Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president and general manager of personal computing in Intel Corporation, said “We’ve been on a multi-year mission to address end-user requirements and transform mobile computing. The introduction of Core M marks a significant milestone in that journey. Core M is the first of a new product family designed to deliver the promise of one of the world’s thinnest laptops and highest performance tablets in a single 2 in 1 device.”
Intel has come a long way from their original Core Processor and continue to offer products that best fit their consumers’ needs.
