Some believe that cloud computing is becoming the most beneficial and most promising model to the IT world. Infrastructure as a Service or IaaS is on of the three categories in cloud computing; along with Software as a Service (SaaS), and Platform as a Service (PaaS). So what is IaaS? It is equipment or a model that is used to support various operations including, storage capabilities, hardware, servers and different networking components. The service provider running IaaS, is responsible for running and maintaining the system.

A feature that is beneficial about IaaS, is its low cost efficiency. The client using the IaaS model is typically charged on a per use basis, meaning that when you aren’t using the model, the charges are significantly lower. Making IaaS not only popular for fast networking, but making if affordable for consumers as well. Some other features of investing in IaaS include:

  1. It’s on demand: You only use the system when you need it
  2. Greater network access: The system is granted with greater network capabilities leading to improvement of your performance and skills
  3. You pay for what you use: Once again, you are charged for consumption

IaaS also has four methods of use when it comes to the cloud computing architecture; public cloud, private cloud, community cloud or a customized or hybrid cloud. Companies can choose from the four for which one suits their needs most.

Pete Nicoletti, Chief Information Security Officer for the IaaS provider, Virtustream, believes that the company focuses on meeting the demand for encryption in cloud computing and offering the consumer multiple options. IaaS can provide the consumer with anything from dynamic scaling to internet connectivity to policy based services.

Nicoletti went on to say, “People rightly perceive certain risks when they’re outsourcing to service providers, the challenge is to show that the IaaS virtual-machine-based data center can be at least as secure as the customer’s data center and preferably more so.”
