When considering what type of internet access to invest in for your home, professional use, or your city. Gigabit Internet is one to consider. With the expansion and accessibility of gigabit internet, more businesses and cities are investing in it due to its fast networking that it offers. It is recorded that is transmits data at a rate of 1,000,000,000 bits per second, or 1 gigabit per second.
Many cities across the nation are taking matters into their own hands and installing their own gigabit networks to help expand their economy. This fast ethernet is considered to be 100 Mbps where your standard internet service is 10 Mbps. Carbondale, Illinois is one city that has made the switch.
In August of 2013, the city located in southern Illinois, has decided to invest 1.5 million dollars in high speed gigabit internet. The 1.5 Million dollar investment will include funding for the high-speed fiber optic network for the cities businesses, hospitals, schools and to the neighborhood. Governor Pat Quinn believes the city will be able to expand economically with the investment making the city of Carbondale the fourth “Gig City” in the state. Governor Quinn announced the partnership for this project involving broadband service provider Frontier North, Inc., the City of Carbondale, Southern Illinois University and the local broadband task force Connect SI. Gigabit Internet runs 100 times faster than what is currently available in southern Illinois which give the city hope for a better economy.
Governor Quinn believes that investing in fast broadband internet access will allow the state to grow. He went on to say:
“Ultra high-speed internet access is a key to success for the future of Illinois, In order to remain competitive in today’s digital society, Illinois must have broadband infrastructure second to none.”
Carbondale is one of many cities investing in fast gigabit internet access in hopes to expand their economy. With Seattle being announced as one of the best internet cities in the United States, gigabit internet may just be the answer to faster access.
