Are Small Sites a Good Fit for SD-WAN or SASE?
The answer is yes — absolutely. Small sites are a great fit for SD-WAN and SASE regardless of size. Whether your company has small sites, large sites, or a mix of both, SD-WAN and SASE can be a great solution. Here are four reasons why.
1. Vendors Adjust Pricing for Smaller Sites
SD-WAN and SASE vendors adjust their pricing based on site size. Large sites with high bandwidth requirements and heavy throughput cost more. Small sites that push less traffic through the environment cost significantly less. Most SASE and SD-WAN vendors scale their pricing accordingly, so don’t assume small sites make the solution cost prohibitive.
What Does That Mean for Your Budget?
If you have a mix of large and small sites, you won’t pay the same rate across the board. Your small sites will come in at a lower price point, which makes the overall deployment more manageable from a cost perspective.
2. Latency Doesn’t Discriminate
Even at a small site, employees may be doing work that demands low latency — CAD drawings, large file transfers, real-time applications, or global site-to-site connectivity. Latency, packet loss, and jitter don’t care about the size of your location. Every employee deserves to work efficiently, regardless of where they sit. SD-WAN and SASE address these performance issues across every site.
3. Security Doesn’t Care About Site Size
SASE is fundamentally about security, and security doesn’t stop mattering just because a location is small. It only takes one employee at one small site to open the wrong email attachment, plug in the wrong device, or click the wrong link to create a breach. Every location is a potential vulnerability. SASE covers every site — small or large — under the same security umbrella.
Why Small Sites Are a Security Risk
Small sites often get less attention from IT. They may run older equipment, have less oversight, and operate with fewer controls. That makes them an attractive target. SASE eliminates that gap by applying consistent security policy across every location in your network.
4. Per-User Pricing Works in Your Favor
Many SASE and SD-WAN vendors charge on a per-user basis — especially for features like Zero Trust Network Access and remote access. Vendors also commonly charge threat prevention on a per-user basis. That means your costs scale directly with the number of users at a site. For small sites with fewer users, that structure makes SASE and SD-WAN very cost effective.
