Launched in 2006, Amazon Web Services (AWS) began exposing key infrastructure services to businesses in the form of web services -- now widely known as cloud computing. The ultimate benefit of cloud computing, and AWS, is the ability to leverage a new business model and turn capital infrastructure expenses into variable costs. Businesses no longer need to plan and procure servers and other IT resources weeks or months in advance. Using AWS, businesses can take advantage of Amazon's expertise and economies of scale to access resources when their business needs them, delivering results faster and at a lower cost.

Today, Amazon Web Services provides a highly reliable, scalable, low-cost infrastructure platform in the cloud that powers hundreds of thousands of businesses in 190 countries around the world. With data center locations in the U.S., Europe, Singapore, and Japan, customers across all industries are taking advantage of our low cost, elastic, open and flexible, secure platform.

Cloud Back-Up - Servers

we are backing up our servers to amazon simple storage service and it is far better than good cloud storage and azure. all three costs similar price and cutting down to match others which gives customers cheaper solution. S3 is is very faster and most of the time it is faster than transferring in networks.

Amazon glacier was one of the best archiving solution you can ask for but it has changed since the arrival of google nearline. it would been a far better review if i had done this last year because it was one of the best then and 4 hour respond time really killed the competition.

If you are using other amazon services then it is a perfect CDN for you.If you're already using AWS S3 , this will be the easiest tech implementation experience you've ever had! Yes you'll need to have been the one who set up S3 but it'll be super fast and easy and your asset load times will be really smooth and faster.
Free-tier service is available for one year following your registration date, with certain bandwidth and feature limitations but hey it is free :). Pricing varied by region and AWS Cloudfront charges HTTP and HTTPS requests as well.

We started using this whe nit was initial stage and as we dont have to manage VDIs, we decided to give it a try. WorkSpaces by Amazon only delivers the Windows 7 Experience via Windows Server 2008 R2. As a result of Microsoft's SPLA, no other licensing is needed. Amazon also offers Active Directory integration. The best thing is that it can run on raspberry pie as well. highly recommend this .

Completely trustworthy so far. We have used Glacier for over a year now for data archive as a plan "C" recovery option. Prices for storage are very reasonable for storage. We have yet to utilize a download attempt of our recovery in a test environment using the low cable internet speeds. However its comforting knowing i always have a 3 month backup readily available in a catastrophe. #spiceworks

While I have been running a Virtual Environment for many years it wasn't until this year that I started trying out many of the public cloud options.

I gave AWS a shot and I have to say they have a lot of features and additional services.

Having all of these services integrated can certainly make AWS a one-stop-shop for moving your infrastructure online.

SWS workspace not a bad product. But it needs imprivement. it is laggy as hell and that I have already lost one chunk of work.Setup is easy or complex depending on whether you need to integrate with an on-premise Active Directory. I have used standalone so it was pretty easy.An annoyance is that you cannot use Microsoft’s standard remote desktop client, but only Amazon’s apps. #spiceworks

Amazon Glacier was great. We were looking for a cloud long term storage for our database admin and he was able to find and incorporate this into snapshots of our VMs. The backup would go on over night and eventually get transferred over to the glacier services for long term storage. Which was fine for 2+ year old snapshots for what we needed. Which was strictly backup and not accessibility.

Very simple to set up and work with. Lots of images to start from (and tools to migrate in house images to their format).
Makes it easy to get a system up and running in a hurry and the pricing is amazing compared to running something in house.
For anything from a quick one off instance to a data center in the cloud AWS can handle it for you.
Things can be as complex or as simple as you want and with their API you can automate almost anything.
A very solid choice if you need cloud services

It is one of the best services we have for server back-end when you are using AWS EC2 or other services. We are using this for years and never had issues so far. IO rates are really good and we are also using elastic blocks for EC2. A great services from amazon, cant find any fault but the only downside is their interface is a bit bad comparing to azure or google cloud storage. they need to work on it. #spiceworks

But the whole interface suck when it comes to designing. i want something simple than too many information in a single page. but apart form that, it is really a great server solution. i have around 5 backup servers waiting to fire-up as a backup and i dont have to pay anything until i start using it which is awesome #spiceworks

I am using Amazon EC2 for 3 years. We are able to leverage AWS EC2 in our development and integration life cycles to minimize the cost of equipment and employees, because we don't have to manage the physical hardware.Even though the prices are set up for enterprise they do seem high for small to mid level businesses, compared to other alternatives. One thing that needs to be improved is IAM users and roles configurations which are complex to configure and understand #spiceworks

S3 is the best storage solution out there for static hosting. Its easy to get up and running quickly and new customers get free storage and data transfer for a year . It worked like a charm for my previous project where I use it for storing random files for installations as well as for shared files. They have nice REST API and APIs on top of REST end points in different languages, you could use pretty much for anything.

The only feature I really dont like most is their web console. The S3 web console lacks simple feature like sorting or even searching. Amazon has had some high profile outages but these have mainly been around their EC2 products so no problem with S3 . #spiceworks.

as a new user, first thing you will notice is the simplicity of it. there are no learning curve to pass and within free trial period , you can be master of this great service. So Make sure you try it with the free amazon level for a while and try some of the tools that work with it before you put a ton of files in there.#spiceworks.

EC2 is massively scalable, which allows you to pay for only what you actually use. We are using it as backup servers as a prt of DR strategy. As part of AWS, EC2 is one in a plethora of sometimes overlapping resource solutions. The ever changing nature of AWS means an operator must be constantly focused on the AWS platform to keep up with changes. The best thing is, it is quick to deploy servers with minimum effort.I have built web/android applications that use EC2 as backend and provide great support. All-inall a great service from amazon. #spiceworks

I am using Amazon web service products for years and one of the best services they offer is Amazon Simple Storage Service (s3). I wasn’t really in to cloud at first but it appears s3 designs for business and it helps to build a strong backup and online archive system. I am using glacier as a part of this for life cycle transitioning and can’t find any better solution. I have tried and using google cloud storage but for backup purpose, I felt s3 is the best. one of the easiest cloud solution to start with and implement. With APIs, you can literally do anything program-wise but the problem is you need to get past the awe-full interface. there is a learning curve but it could been avoided if they design the interface a bit better. I am using AWS storage for years. I started using glacier and realized in need a lot more than that when i need to retrieve anything. Glacier is perfect for those who just need to archive everything , not retrieving chuck data. So i started using S3 and it is worth for $0.03/gb. The storage is really fast and i can download it faster than copying a file from my external NAS server. S3 pricing is pretty straight forward but beware using glacier when you need anything back from it, you could end up with hefty charges. #spiceworks

Pros

Easily scalable.
Able to get email/mobile notifications if issues with servers.
An easy to use and navigate GUI.

Cons

Price!
I know it’s more tailored to large enterprise, so some price structures seem quite extreme for small to medium size business .

Conclusion

Amazon Web Services is well suited for us as we don’t have to deal with physical infrastructure and want a high level of security and availability. Though if our needs increase in the future, we will have to revisit if it’s still cost efficient to pay per min or built local infrastructure.

Cloud VM's (Public Cloud)

11/06/15

After years of a 'fingers crossed and eyes closed' update procedures, and a couple moments in the fire. We decided to take the higher route and move our testing to the cloud. After the initial investment in time of setting up a similar environment on AWS, we update all of the VM's to our current production versions and began testing. Once we had everything working as close to production as we could we were set to start breaking things (patching). This time with out the fear of losing production time, or our fingernails.

We have been using AWS for a little over 6 months now, and it has saved our tails a couple times already. We chose to use the hourly charge service and we end up spending less than .90 cents an hour when we are testing. Management was easily convinced to spend the extra cost a month to ensure we are up as much as possible in production. They have been very happy, which means we are happy.

We have also started to use the service for training our new techs. We setup a small environment of a couple servers and hosts. Then we break a couple things like dhcp, dns, and maybe some gpo's set to mess with them. I give them a small explanation of what isn't working and tell them dive in. Even if they don't resolve the issues, they are getting familiar with the OS's and we don't have to babysit them like we would on a production machine. If they break it, no big deal.

Overall we have been very happy with our decision to move our testing to the cloud. We are now looking at possibly moving a couple of our non-critical VM's up there permanently, and switching to a set monthly charge.

I'm loving Amazon S3. It's a huge help to be able to upload any type of document - PDF, Word, Excel, and even JPG's - and be able to link them on our site and in our emails.
The one thing I haven't figured out how to do on Amazon S3 yet (which is why I'm only giving it 4.5 stars) is easily moving files from one folder to another. It would be a big help in terms of organization to not have to delete it, reupload it and then relink it.
Hope this helps!
