Business Phone Systems (Hosted PBX, Cloud PBX, Hosted VoIP)

Overall the service has been good. The company has had problems with lines not working and challenges with billing. The problems do eventually get fixed but we just don't want the extra work. They have your average VOIP services and I will still recommend them to SMB.

SIP Trunks

I have so far implemented 3 SIP trunk solutions for clients and i can say that I am satisfied with my decision. It is not for everyone, could be a bit pricey but comes with free international Toll-Free Service. Their Flexible Scalability and Local Number Portability Support are very competitive to those who want to migrate. i could reccomend this to everyone who has long distance coverage. #spicysip

SIP Trunks

09/02/16

We made the switch from the old POTs lines to VOIP w/ CenturyLink a few years ago when I was just getting started in my current job. The SIP lines themselves have been fine. The service that we've received from CenturyLink(in the Mountain States area), however, has been decent in some aspects but awful in most others. I know that's not really fair without a detailed explanation but there just isn't enough time or space to cover everything in a single review. We will be switching to a new SIP provider (in house or hosted) as soon as our contract is up. #spicysip

We are using a 10Mx10M EoC line for connection with a SIP trunk. At the time this was the fastest upload option in the area. It has been very consistent and stable. This connection has done everything we asked for so far but we are starting to outgrow it. We are in the process of switching to a fiber line though for faster and cheaper service.

CenturyLink is the only provider in the area offering EoC. I have been happy with the service. Upgraded about 6 months ago to increase speeds. It was an easy painless process. As far a price goes, they seem to offer competitive rates compared to other providers that we have at different sites.

When one of our clients moved to a remote area, there were only a couple options available for the services they needed. We went with CenturyLink for Businesses. It was a great choice. The folks over there were easy to work with, understood our need and got us with a great solution that made the client happy. Will choose them again.

Of the few encounters I have had with CenturyLink the most recent was the worst. Multiple transfers, multiple times on hold, and multiple pieces of information I needed to provide them before they would even help me. As an MSP - I know that security and protecting client information is of utmost importance, but they really made this inconvenient.

Ultimately, we get what we pay for at this particular facility. Even though we have the max speeds offered, it still is slow.

If I had other options for connectivity, then I definitely would. It seems that anytime there is something we would like to improve on our contract, it is a 2-4 month process. You would think that they would be customer friendly, to increase business and to get good words to come out of my mouth. We are located in a rural area, and unfortuantely they are the only ones here for now. I have heard that we should have another provider in about a year....I'll be watching and checking them out prior to that. Hopefully CL will not be as difficult to deal with as they were with swicthing from POTS lines to a different hosted partner. It took closer to 6 months to get everything done, including to fix their billing for something that was already canceled.

SIP Trunks

02/29/16

We’re a small credit union with 5 branches in western WA supporting about 70 users. Two years ago, we decided to purchase a new VoIP phone system and, in doing so, to switch from PRI to SIP trunking since there were some cost savings to be had in doing so. While this proved to be one of the more complicated parts of our conversion to the new phone system, we have not had any trouble with SIP. We were lucky enough to have a phone vendor well versed in this conversion, and they were able to assist us in making sure that everything was in place as it should be for the new system. In looking back, I don't believe I've had a single instance where I needed to call CenturyLink for a problem with our SIP trunks. We are happy with them as SIP provider and not looking to change any time soon.

MPLS WAN

02/29/16

We’re a small credit union with 5 branches in western WA supporting about 70 users. At some point before I started here (which was 5 years ago), the decision was made to use CenturyLink MPLS to connect all of our locations together. I think the decision was made to go with CenturyLink because they are pretty big in this area and the typical thing to do network-wise at the time was to string branches together via MPLS with T-1 lines. A couple of years ago, the contract was renegotiated to provide two bonded T-1s to the branches (3Mbps) while the main office was increased to 10Mbps over fiber.

When the service works, it works well in utilizing the bandwidth that is available. We don’t have crazy bandwidth requirements, so everything typically chugs along just fine with occasional spikes here and there. We know that we could always pay for more bandwidth, but we do a pretty good job in working around the limitations of what we have. Uptime is generally excellent.

But, when something goes wrong, prepare for a bumpy ride. While it’s easy enough to open a support case, there is a huge breakdown from that point. From a service standpoint, CenturyLink is a victim of its own size. It feels like “the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing”. Service technicians will come out to a location with their marching orders, handle their specific request, and then leave…whether or not the problem has been resolved. It’s rare to find someone who is willing to take ownership of a problem and sincerely try to help. We’ve had few great experiences, but we’re fortunate to have an account rep who can “turn the heat up” if needed.

While uptime, as I mentioned, is pretty good, the awful service experiences when there are problems makes it hard to consider sticking around. I’m currently in the process of keeping my eyes and ears open to any alternatives.

DSL Internet

We are an MSP for a number of clients in small town Iowa. CenturyLink is one of the few big time ISP'S in our location. Overall, with the number of small business clients that use CenturyLink it's not the best experience.

The support is mediocre at best. I've called multiple techs and support lines and about 50% of the time you will get a rep who wants to help with your needs.

As for Internet quality. Simply put it works. The problems occur when it's not working, because you are on the phone for hours, they do not want to send out technicians same day, and they take forever to help their customers. We had a client who asked CenturyLink to set up backup Internet. It took the company over a month to get it figured out.

If there is another ISP around use them. If CenturyLink is the only one you will have some headaches occasionally.

Fiber Internet

We are a small to medium software development company that has about 300 employees and over 1000 customers nation wide.

We've had CenturyLink Business's fiber internet product for 3 years now.

We switched to them to save some money on our ISP costs and they were able to provide a stellar service level agreement for an awesome price.

CenturyLink Business's fiber internet product has been good to us. We have 3 ISPs for our company. CenturyLink is our main ISP. When we have problems upstream they work to resolve it quickly. We offer a software as a service product and we're able to provide good service to our customers.

We will for sure renew our contract with them when it comes up in the next few months.

DSL Internet

Patently the most incompetent (and possibly dishonest) sales people I've yet to come across.

December 2015, a sales rep from CL called our office to announce that they had fiber Internet in our area, and were offering 20 megabyte-per-second speeds. I kindly told the sales rep he was misinformed, and wished him a good day.

5 minutes later, the rep's Sales Manager called me to ascertain my lack of interest, and I explained to him that CL has made us such an offer before which turned out to be in MEGABITS, *not* megabytes. He offered to do some research, and later called me back insisting that he was 100% sure that the service was in megabytes.

Still dubious, I contacted CenturyLink directly and spoke to a "Certified Sales Consultant" who again gave me every assurance that the service offered was 20 megabytes-per-second.

We scheduled an install date 1 week away, and unfortunately learned that requesting any changes to the work set us back yet another week. 2 changes later, our install date was pushed to 3 weeks away. A bit unnerving, but if CL could deliver what they promised, it'd be worth the wait.

The day of the install comes: I'd decided to just hit up the service tech with questions the moment he walked in the door rather than waste his time. Lo and behold, it's 20 megabits - NOT MEGABYTES. We stop him there, he laughs and apologies, and cancels the whole thing there and then.

As it turns out, had we gone through with the install, the level of service in our area would likely have maxed at 12mbps, not even 20. Who does CL think they're kidding? I felt bad for the poor service tech.

TL;DR: Three separate CenturyLink sales reps all promise us 20 megabyte-per-second speeds, even after we're skeptical and ask each to double-check their figures. Install date comes 3 weeks later: Tech informs us that the service is only up to 20 megabits, but will realistically be more like 12 in our area. There's literally an 800% difference between megabits and megabytes.

Don't trust a thing CenturyLink tells you.

We have this and its alright, but the speeds are awful at 3 megs per remote site with a 10 meg pipe coming in here. They regularly have problems and are easily overloaded. But we don't have a lot of options at some of these remote sites, we hope to upgrade to something faster in the (hopefully near) future!
