324px) 100vw, 324px\" \/><\/a>As I looked over at my wife, she and I both knew what one another was feeling at the same time.\u00a0 We were sick with disbelief and pity as we watched six year old daughter, from afar, get picked on by one of her friends at a party we were attending.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t the first time we had noticed this type of pattern.\u00a0 We also had seen that she had a lot of anxiety when meeting new kids.<\/p>\n<p>We said nothing, since our parenting philosophy is that kids need to figure these things out on their own, (unless someone is getting hurt), but we immediately started game planning in our heads&#8230;\u00a0 especially me.<\/p>\n<p>I immediately felt this parenting lesson was on me.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because that\u2019s exactly how I was when I was her age and my wife did not share this personality.\u00a0 I have had to overcome this my whole life so I was the best person to help her.<\/p>\n<p>Shyness and non-confrontational behavioral traits suck for the person it dwells within.\u00a0 It has no benefit that I can think of but it\u2019s a P.I.T.A. to weed out of yourself.\u00a0 It also never completely goes away.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been a few years since that day and my daughter is doing a fantastic job conquering this genetic hurdle I gave her.\u00a0 From time to time, I have a heart-to-heart with her and remind her \u201cBeing shy will hinder you more than it helps you in life, so you\u2019ve got to continually work on beating it.\u201d<strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerocominc.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/b2.jpg\" 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Who, me?\u00a0 Yes, you!\u00a0 Couldn\u2019t be?\u00a0 Then, who?&#8230; \u00a0 <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">One upside to this personality trait is that I feel like it helps me excel at my job.\u00a0 How, you say?\u00a0 <\/span>Because YOU have it too<em style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">.<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0 It\u2019s no secret that the majority of IT Professionals share this with me.\u00a0 I GET YOU!&#8230;\u00a0 at least in that regard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But, let\u2019s not go too overboard.\u00a0 It has obviously not slowed you down much.\u00a0 You\u2019ve dominated that shyness!\u00a0 I know this because you\u2019re managing an IT Department, or quickly on your way!\u00a0 Managing people, interacting with management, dealing with crisis, working with vendors \u2013 none that can be done by someone wallowing in their shyness.\u00a0 You\u2019re a champ.\u00a0 Let\u2019s have a beer to celebrate!\u00a0 \u2026ok, maybe later?<\/p>\n<p>As a business owner of 11 years and salesperson for many years, I too have had to successfully develop strategies that minimize this weakness of mine.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, I thought you\u2019d like to hear little tricks I have learned on how to successfully negotiate with salespeople when buying a large item for your company.\u00a0 As you know, if done improperly, negotiating can really hit a shy and non-confrontational person in their soft spot.\u00a0 Therefore, I\u2019ve had to develop a proven method that I feel works very well.<\/p>\n<p>At some point, many people start to believe that they have to be super confrontational in order to get good pricing and I\u2019ve found that to be totally false.\u00a0 You just have to get multiple quotes so that you have a few to compare, then use a simple principle.<\/p>\n<p>I touched on this subject in my video blog (*Episode 8 of Mike Smith\u2019s Brain), but I\u2019d like to expand on the concepts I mentioned.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Buyer Beware<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Review:\u00a0 Most sales professionals, (including telecom &amp; cloud salespeople), do not need a license to sell.\u00a0 Therefore, there is NO governing body to keep them honest so it\u2019s \u201cBuyer Beware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerocominc.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/b3.jpg\" rel='magnific'><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8266 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aerocominc.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/b3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aerocominc.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/b3.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.aerocominc.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/b3-300x199.jpg 300w, 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So how will I ever have time to research every detail and read the fine print on all agreements?\u00a0 Let\u2019s admit it\u2026 that\u2019s great in theory but that WILL NEVER HAPPEN.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, I\u2019ve realized I have 2 choices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pretend I\u2019m asking all the right questions and make an educated guess on which vendor is presenting the most value.<\/li>\n<li>Buy on relationship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I see number 1 happening too much.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I\u2019m writing this.<\/p>\n<p>You can probably guess that I choose number 2.\u00a0 My feeling is that I will never go terribly wrong if I am buying from a great person.\u00a0 A great person won\u2019t typically be working for a bad company and a great person will also be much more likely to help me if things go sideways with their product.<\/p>\n<p>I know you have a lot of \u201cyeah, but\u201d remarks so, here is a Q&amp;A on how I do that.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>How do I Buy on Relationship?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Q:\u00a0 \u201cWhat if you don\u2019t have a relationship with any of the salespeople?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0 BS.\u00a0 You can absolutely \u201cfeel\u201d honesty, the second you meet someone.\u00a0 If you are a horrible judge of character, find a colleague that is better at this and have them meet the vendors.\u00a0 Which salesperson feels like someone you could be friends with?\u00a0 Which feels like you know who they are and who they are not?\u00a0 Our personality is especially good at observing people, so I know you can figure this out.\u00a0 If none of the salespeople you\u2019re working with feel this way, quote more vendors. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerocominc.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/b4.jpg\" rel='magnific'><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8267 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aerocominc.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/b4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"244\" 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:\u00a0 \u201cWhat if the person you like has a really high price?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0 This happens a lot.\u00a0 Why?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Because they are not liars and actually quoting you on what you <em>need<\/em>, not only on what they think is going to get you to bite.<\/li>\n<li>Their product also might be higher quality, since good people tend to work for good companies.<\/li>\n<li>The liar rep is probably about to lose their job, so they are trying to do anything to win your business, including dropping the price so low that they\u2019ll make zero commission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No matter what the reason, don\u2019t just pick the crummy rep based on price!\u00a0 At least give the honest rep a chance to enlighten you.\u00a0 My piece of mind technique is that I go to the rep I like and tell them the truth.\u00a0 \u201cI really would prefer to work with you and your company but I have another bid that seems like the same product at a much lower price.\u00a0 \u00a0Can you please help me understand why your bid is so much higher than the others I\u2019ve received?\u201d\u00a0 You might be surprised what you learn.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been selling to IT Professionals for many years and this is one thing that I rarely see.\u00a0 I think many of you think it\u2019s confrontational but it\u2019s totally not.\u00a0 From a salesperson\u2019s perspective, it\u2019s phenomenal.\u00a0 Us honest salespeople have gotten burned so many times by clients falling for the old \u201csmoke and mirrors\u201d tricks of dishonest reps.\u00a0 We love it when a client is smart and gives us an opportunity to compare apples to apples.\u00a0 We are also never afraid to tell you when we\u2019re beat and play the long-term game of \u201cI can\u2019t help you today but I\u2019m sure I\u2019ll be able to help at some point.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8268 alignright\" 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:\u00a0 \u201cWhat if the salesperson is just nice but not good at their job?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0 I agree that is a possibility.\u00a0 That is why I always make sure to somehow slip in the question \u201cHow long have you been at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">insert their company name<\/span>?\u00a0 If it\u2019s less than 2 years, ask to speak with their manager and ask yourself how you feel about them?\u00a0 Is this someone you automatically feel connected with?\u00a0 I would also ask them how long they have been with the company.\u00a0 Good companies with good products tend to keep good salespeople for long periods of time.\u00a0 Period.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s my trick to making great purchases and it works very well.\u00a0 Buy on relationship, not pricing.\u00a0 Don\u2019t ignore the little voice, telling you the salesperson seems fake or strange or untrustworthy.\u00a0Go with your gut!\u00a0 Shy people
