This year at the IFA 2014<\/span><\/span><\/a>, a global trade show for consumer electronics and home appliances, there were plenty of new innovative products: TV sets, smartphones, wearables, interconnected living rooms, and even convenient kitchen gadgets. But a certain trend in products stood out, super-thin tablets and 2-in-1 PCs, many of which were created by Intel’s new Core M chips. Intel has been teasing us with glimpses of a 7.2 mm-thick tablet<\/span><\/a> which is thinner than an iPad air.<\/p>\n

Intel plans to use these new processors to power new 2-in-1 devices from manufacturers which include: Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Toshiba. According to Intel, the processor delivers an optimal blend of mobility and performance; and was built for amazing performance in the thinnest, fanless ultra-mobile devices. The Core M also doubles battery life.<\/p>\n

Core M is coming after Intel’s current “Y series” of Haswell processors, which are used in certain 2-in-1 PCs.<\/p>\n

The Intel Core M is about 50 percent faster in compute performance and 40 percent faster in graphics performance, compared to older 4th generation Intel PCs. The company said, \u201cThe Intel Core M processor and platform power reductions raise the bar on battery life even higher. The Intel Core M processor can handle more than 8 hours of video play, which is up to 20 percent (1.7 hours) longer battery life versus previous-generation Intel Core processors and double the battery life of the average 4-year-old PC.\u201d These perks make this new processor a leader in the industry.<\/p>\n

In addition to speed, the Core M is also 50 percent smaller and 60 percent lower thermal power than previous generations, at 4.5 watts. Because of its small size, OEMs are able to create ultra-thin, fanless systems that are smaller than 9 mm. The Intel Core M processor should be available starting this coming holiday season. As mentioned earlier, other manufacturers will be unveiling devices of all shapes, sizes, and prices \u2013 and these products will be built with the Core M in mind.<\/p>\n
