Dedicated Server vs. Virtual Private Server (VPS)

A dedicated server or a Virtual Private Server may be on your mind if you are looking for more power or control of your online presence or you just want out of a shared hosting plan.

There are four important characteristics that one should consider when making the comparison: Flexibility, Control, Supported Features, and Cost.

Flexibility:
If you are looking to have full control of a physical server and complete access to all resources, then a dedicated server is what you should be looking towards. A Virtual Private Server (VPS) will allow you to control a virtualized machine on a server that my host several other virtual enterprises.

Most websites do not need the power that a dedicated server provides. It may even be easier to move to a new server at any given time with a Virtual Private Server (VPS).

Control:
As stated before, a dedicated server offers more control and customization of a server. The main difference between both types of servers is that one is a physical hardware and the other is virtual. Some Virtual Private Server hosting companies may by a limit on how many domains you can host and other service restrictions.

Supported Features
These two hosting enable the customer with popular software features. These features include blogging tools, content management systems, eCommerce Packages, etc.

Cost:
The biggest difference out of the two hosting is the cost you’ll be paying on a monthly basis. Dedicated hosting are more expensive since it can run to almost $1000.00/month. A Virtual Private Server (VPS) on the other hand is as low as $14.99/month for clients.
